Vicarious Trauma vs Vicarious Resilience

Vicarious trauma is caused by continuous, indirect exposure to trauma through another person’s firsthand account or narrative. Trauma may be experienced by a lawyer in many different types of legal work, e.g. immigration law, family law, personal injury law, criminal law.


I fully understand that, in these turbulent times and in your turbulent work environment, one day work stress will catch up with you. Not always it is possible to cut down on your workload, see fewer clients or change jobs. What could you do to deal with this stress? The answer is short: improve your resilience.

About the webinar

Hearing or reading awfully painful client’s stories can lead to indirect or secondary (vicarious) trauma. It’s not your trauma, but it affects you severely, and might lead to PTSS.


Why would you be affected?

People who have had a traumatic childhood or whose parents were traumatised by certain events, may be more prone to vicarious trauma.


Tools

As a hypnotherapist/hypnotist and therapeutic coach I regularly hear my client’s stories and it I wouldn’t be human if these stories didn’t affect me.

Luckily I have a support system (fellow therapists) and tools to deal with these stories. Tools that were taught to me, tools that I have sharpened over the years.


Tools that are not taught to legal professionals. In general, the focus is on helping as many clients as possible, leaving little time to process everything. Let alone the lack of protocols in place or the safety to express any worries.


Up close, I have witnessed friends and family members taking their work stress home with them. They were either short-tempered, drank too much, relationships suffered, and more.

That might be true, but I also know the opposite is true: they are not used to seeking help, thinking that they need to figure it out themselves, believing they have to be strong.
